Officiating Tips

As a basketball official, each of us should attempt to understand the game from several perspectives  The following list of characteristics was offered by the men’s head basketball coach (Brad Barbarick) at Concordia University at a recent officials’ seminar.  The following attributes are what he considered the ones he would most like to see in any official who works one of his games.  Whether you are just starting your officiating career, or if you have 30 years of experience, I think you will benefit from looking at this list, and trying to make them part of your coaching philosophy.

  1. Know the rules inside and out.  (But don’t flaunt your knowledge)
  2. Understand the game–be aware of the flow of the game; when to “let’em play” and when to “call it”.
  3. Be Consistent.  (Rules apply equally to both teams)
  4. Fair and Honest.  (Occasionally be willing to admit a mistake, or help a partner who has made the wrong call)
  5. Be in shape.  Know when and where to move for the best vantage point.)
  6. Emotional Control.  Basketball is the most difficult sport to officiate.  Know how to handle players, coaches, fans.
  7. Sense of humor.  Make the game fun for everyone.

As we start the basketball season, the EBOA wishes all of you a successful and rewarding season.  Let’s make this season one we can be proud of.
